About this video...
One of the most influential American artists of this century, Robert Rauschenberg has an unquenchable zest for experimenting in various media and an undiminished zeal for fusing real life with art. Some early canvases, including one that is a made-up bed, predate Pop Art and are created with household items, chairs, ladders, even junk and rags. Other works encompass dance, collage, frottage, air brush, and the latest technology; some stem from Rauschenberg's friendships and collaborations, notably with Merce Cunningham, Jasper Johns, and John Cage. The highlight of this program, filmed at his Captiva island studio, is Rauschenberg's autobiography, the multimedia 1/4 Mile Piece, begun in 1981 and now 790 feet long. Seen for the first time in its entirety, this monumental work-in-progress exemplifies the originality and genius of an artist always ahead of his time. |
