Cot made his debut at the Salon of 1863 in Paris, then developed a successful career as a portrait painter favored by the Parisian aristocracy. He also studied classical antiquity and mythology. His popular painting The Storm is thought to illustrate a scene from Daphnis et Chloe, an idyllic romance by Longus (Greek, 3rd or 4th century A.D.)
