About this image...
c. 1874 Oil on canvas. ------------ Certain subjects fascinated Degas throughout his long career -- the body in motion, epitomized by the ballet, racehorses, and the female form in postures of daily life, both intimate and public. He painted in oils but was a consummate master of the medium of pastel, which allowed him to work rapidly and to capture the fluidity of motion and the nuances of light. He also produced a number of exquisite wax sculptures that were cast in bronze only after his death. Although a lifelong bachelor, this leading exponent of Impressionism was devoted to observing and recording the feminine in his art. |
