This panoramic view of Rome, Italy was taken by James Blakeway. It features a panoramic view of Rome and, in the distance, Vatican City and St. Peters Basilica, home of the Catholic Church and its supreme monarch, The Pope. Centered in the photograph is the Piazza del Populo, or ³peoples square². Masked revelers once filled the square for the torchlit festivities of Roman Carnival. The great Obelisk of Pharoah Ramses II command the center of the Square. The obelisk, some 3200 years old, was brought from Eqypt in the 1st century B.C. Located around St. Peters Basilica are the Sistine Chapel, Vatican Museums, and St. Peters Square.
