This panoramic photograph of London, England was taken by James Blakeway. The image features the Houses of Parliament, the Westminster Bridge, and the clock commonly known as Big Ben as seen looking across the River Thames. Big Ben is actually a 15 ton bell that tolls the hours. The Roman numerals on the clock face measure 2 feet in length; the hour hand 14 feet and the mechanism moving the hands is still wound manually. Westminster, the area included in this photograph, is the seat of government and the royal residence. The Houses of Parliament occupy the former site of a royal palace that burned in 1834.
