This panoramic view of Florence, Italy was photographed by James Blakeway. Centered in the photograph is the Piazza del Duomo, originally commissioned in 1296 as a cathedral so magnificent that it will be impossible to make it either better or more beautiful with the industry and power of man. The covered bridge to the left is the Ponte Vecchio and has spawned the Arno river at narrowest point since Roman times. Until 1218 it was Florence¹s only bridge over the Arno. Florence has a heritage rich with a character from the Renaissance era. Museums contain much of best Renaissance painting and sculpture in the world.
