Investigate the basic materials and methods for making sculpture, beginning with the three fundamental techniques: the manipulative, additive, and subtractive processes. Work with clay and found objects to communicate traditional or contemporary ideas in three dimensions. Examine the Museum's collection of sculpture to stir up the creative juices. Drawing from the live model, study the human body as a basis for your own artistic interpretation. The art of the 17th century is both visually dynamic and emotionally dramatic. The Museum's world-renowned collection of Baroque paintings will be the starting point for an investigation of the cultures that produced Baroque art. Topics include the Golden Age of Spain, the rise of landscape, and the art of the still life in Holland.
Portrait paintings have often told the greatest stories and expressed the strongest emotions in the history of art. Learn the basics of facial proportion and structure in this course dedicated to capturing the limitless possibilities of the portrait. Begin by learning to sketch essential anatomy, then build the confidence to apply the first layers of paint to canvas. Explore the Museum's special exhibition of female portraits, Painting Women: Fragonard to Bouguereau. Materials are not included; you will receive a materials list upon registration.
Experiment with design and color and explore the endless possibilities of self-expression by creating a variety of multidimensional artworks. Projects include mask making, air-dry clay sculpture, batik, marbling, wire craft, jewelry, and papermaking. Explore two exciting types of books as art: the pop-up and Jacob's ladder books. Begin by working through a series of pop-up-book exercises to better understand the properties of paper and the mechanics of this amusing book form. Spend the following session making a dynamic Jacob's ladder book, in which pages flip from front to back as if by magic! All materials are provided.
Learn how to make Polaroid image and emulsion transfers in this one-day workshop. Create painterly compositions with muted colors and emulsion transfers that yield clear, color-saturated versions of an original slide. Experiment with producing multiples, enhancing colors, and shaping and stretching images. Open to beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Everyone is required to bring a minimum of ten slides to class.
Capture the five senses in two dimensions using watercolors in this course designed to reinforce the fundamentals of color and technique. Individual attention is given to each student to provide the practice and confidence it takes to paint for pleasure. Both beginning and intermediate artists are welcome. Trace the beginnings of American painting from the early colonial period-in which artists carried forward ideas established in England and on the Continent-to the Hudson River School, which embodied a uniquely American style.
