Subway Car Handhold,Circa 1960-1970Thin, elongated, stirrup-shaped, stainless-steel handholds replaced metalhand-bars in new subway cars in the late-1950s and 1960s.
Handholds of this type (Ellcon Co. No. 45) were first installed in R26 passenger cars built in 1959-60, and were featured on all orders of new subway cars until the introduction of the R44s in 1971-72. These handholds were standard fixtures onthe "Redbirds" (R26, R28, R29, R33, R36), the last of which were taken out of passenger service in 2003. |
