About this book...
This award-winning catalogue was published in conjunction with the 1991 exhibition, "Latin American Drawings Today". 49 Latin American artist from Mexico to Chile are represented, some of whom are: Ram—n Alejandro; Jorge Alvaro Guillermo Nu–ez; Isabel Ruiz; JosŽ Miguel Rojas; and Helen Escobedo. The fragmentary history of drawing in combination with the complex political development of Latin America would seem to crate an unmanageable focus for an exhibition and accompanying catalogue, and yet a unifying factor emerges: an extraordinary vitality. The twinned threads of pre-Columbian murals and European Renaissance painting have co-evolved centuries later into a strong tradition of fusion plus exploration. Folk art, mythology, and an ever-fluctuation interaction with international post-war art influences contribute to Latin American drawing today. Essays by Mary Stofflet, Curator, Modern Art, San Diego Museum of Art, Shifra M. Goldman, Research Associate, Latin American Center, UCLA, Gloria Zea, Director, Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogota, and BŽlgica Rodr’guez, Director, Museum of Modern Art of Latin America, Washington, D.C. Embossed, archival chip board cover, 109 pages, 11.25" x 8", 65 color plates.
