Construction: Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, Gustave Eiffel, Richard Morris Hunt
From far away the out stretched torch of the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and independence, is visible to the newcomers of the New World. The statue, based on the design by Alsatian sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, came to America as a gift from the French people. Gustave Eiffel saw to it that the robe of sheet copper was riveted to an ingenious steel girder construction. The resulting elasticity serves to help the statue withstand wind and weather.
