1867-1883
Architect: John August Robling

Led by the German-born American engineer John August Robling 600 people toiled almost sixteen years to complete the bridge. Twenty workers paid for this masterpiece with their lives and Robling himself died as the result of a work-related accident. His son Washington, Who from that point took over the project, also became seriously ill. It was his wife Emily who was able to complete the work of her father-in-law. In 1883 after the fourteen-mile-long steel cables had been strung between the granite neo-Gothic columns, the miraculous construction could display at last its purpose to 150,000 cheering New Yorkers.
