Perhaps
the central painter of the High Renaissance, Raphael
continually proved his genius with seemingly effortless
grace.
Born in 1483, he studied painting in Florence and became
an apprentice to Perugino, achieving and enjoying fame
early on and throughout his life. His work, which often
shows a combined influence of Leornardo da Vinci and
Michelangelo, caught the attention of Pope Julius II who
commissioned Raphael to paint religious frescos in the
Vatican. The Sistine Madonna is Raphael's most celebrated
achievement.
